According to UNICEF, 94 percent of households in Nigeria do not practice proper hand washing with soap under running water. This poor hygiene practice leads to the spread of communicable diseases that causes the death of millions of children. Therefore, to improve proper hand washing with soap under running, on the 14/03/2020 the people of Takalafia community were sensitized and educated on proper hand washing and how to construct tippy taps, which is a hands free way to wash hands that is especially appropriate for rural areas where there is no running water. This is an ongoing project; more households are encouraged to construct their latrines and tippy taps to improve hygiene practice.

C-BIGS is committed to working the government of Nigeria to end open defecation, Takalafia community haven been triggered, have taken up the responsibility to construct more household latrines. After the triggering exercise, 26 households have since constructed their latrines and are now using it. 10 still under construction while the remaining households are warming up.

Takalafia like most communities in FCT practice open defecation. To create awareness and put an end to this disgusting practice, Takalafia was triggered on the 22 February 2020 using Community – Led Total Sanitation approach. Households are been monitored and provide necessary support to ensure that they continue to dig more latrines.
